I used to believe this myth, too! It turns out it’s not true. The mother bird does not abandon its baby just because a human has touched it; that would just be a really horrible thing. In fact, many birds have a poor sense of smell, so they wouldn’t even be able to detect the scent of a human on their baby bird. 

The best thing to do if you find a baby bird is to try to return it to its nest if you can reach it safely. Or you can make a makeshift nest out of a small box with holes… However, the best course of action is to leave it alone unless it is injured or in immediate danger.
